From candle-lit Shabbat tables to study and song in the midrash, Jewish life is woven into the rhythm of every week at Attesi — high in the mountains of Mexico.

A Different Kind of Shabbat

There is a particular quiet that settles over the mountains on Friday afternoon. The gardens slow down, the kitchen fills with the smell of fresh challah, and families begin to gather as the light turns golden over the valley. At Attesi, Shabbat is not something that happens apart from daily life — it is the still point the whole week turns around.

Removed from the noise and speed of the city, Shabbat here feels closer to what it was always meant to be: a full day to set down work, share a table, and be present with the people around you. Guests often tell us it is the first time in years they have truly unplugged for twenty-five hours.

The Midrash: A Home for Learning and Song

At the heart of Jewish life at Attesi is the midrash — a warm, light-filled study hall lined with sefarim and opening onto the gardens. It is a place for morning prayers wrapped in tallit and tefillin, for learning that stretches into the afternoon, and for the kind of joyful, music-filled davening that fills the room with guitar and drum.

The midrash is open to everyone, from lifelong learners to those taking their first steps into Jewish text and practice. The atmosphere is curious rather than formal — questions are welcome, and no one is expected to arrive knowing everything.

We did not want a community where Jewish life sits in one building and the rest of life happens somewhere else. Here, the two are the same thing.

Holidays Rooted in the Land

Living on the land changes the way the holidays feel. Sukkot lands differently when you have spent the year tending the gardens whose fruit fills the table. Tu BiShvat — the new year of the trees — is celebrated among actual orchards. Chanukah lights glow against the cold mountain night, and the counting of the Omer moves through the growing season. The Jewish calendar and the agricultural one travel together, the way they were always designed to.

What Jewish Life at Attesi Looks Like

  • Shabbat together — communal Friday-night and Shabbat-day meals, with room for guests at the table.
  • Daily prayer & learning — davening and Torah study in the midrash, open to all levels.
  • A kosher kitchen — everything prepared under kosher supervision, much of it grown on-site.
  • A natural mikvah — a spring-fed ritual bath set into the landscape.
  • Holidays in season — the Jewish calendar celebrated in rhythm with the land.

You do not have to be observant to feel it. Whether you come for a single Shabbat or settle in for a season, Jewish life at Attesi is something you are invited into — gently, and at your own pace.
