How to get here from Mexico City, when to come, what to pack, and how to make the most of your first stay in the mountains of Attesi — everything you need to plan the trip.

Where Is Attesi?

Attesi sits in the mountains of Villa de Allende, in the State of Mexico — roughly a two-and-a-half hour drive west of Mexico City, and not far from the lakeside town of Valle de Bravo. At more than 2,000 metres above sea level, the air is cool and clean, the nights are crisp, and the surrounding forest is part of the same highland ecosystem that draws the monarch butterflies each winter.

Getting Here

Most guests arrive by car from Mexico City or Toluca — the drive is straightforward and scenic, climbing gradually into pine forest. Toluca International Airport is the closest, about an hour and a half away. If you would rather not drive, we can help arrange private transport from the city or the airport; just let us know your plans when you book.

When to Visit

Attesi is beautiful year-round, but each season has its own character. Spring and summer bring green gardens and warm afternoons; autumn is golden and calm. From roughly November through March, the nearby sanctuaries fill with millions of migrating monarch butterflies — one of the most extraordinary natural events in the world, and an easy day trip from Attesi. Winter nights are cold, so plan to pack warm layers.

What to Pack

  • Layers — mountain weather shifts quickly; bring warm layers even in summer.
  • Sturdy shoes — for garden walks, hikes, and uneven terrain.
  • A reusable water bottle — refill stations are available on-site.
  • Modest, comfortable clothing — especially if you plan to join Shabbat or the midrash.
  • A swimsuit — for the cold plunge and the spring-fed mikvah.

Making the Most of Your Stay

However long you come for, leave room to slow down. A few of the experiences guests love most:

  • A temazcal ceremony — the traditional Mesoamerican sweat lodge, for deep rest and renewal.
  • The natural mikvah and cold plunge — spring-fed water set into the landscape.
  • Garden and farm walks — see the permaculture gardens that feed the community.
  • Mountain hikes — trails into the surrounding forest, with wide valley views.
  • The Attesi Market Café — fresh, kosher food made largely from what is grown on-site.
Come for the mountains and the quiet. Most people leave talking about the people.
